
Queen Latifah, was born Dana Elaine Owens, March 18, 1970 in Newark. The second daughter of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is most well-known for her work in social politics, acting skills and gift for rhyme. At the age of 8 old an Muslim relative gave her the name Latifah, meaning "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah began singing in the choir of Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and performed for the first time in public when she sang a version of "Home" as one of two Dorothys in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's parochial school. Latifah's mother was the catalyst. She was connected to the students as well as the music. Mark James, a local disc jockey, also known as D.J., was invited to attend the event.
